We understand that being a pregnant student or a student who is nursing is an important facet of your identity, and we want you to be proudly visible on campus as both a parent and a student.
National research indicates that 26% of all undergraduate students have dependents. On average, student parents earn higher grade point averages, yet their retention rates are significantly lower than other students (52% of student parents drop out within six years of enrolling, compared to 32% of non-parents). CSUCI’s goal is to ensure that all student parents have the support and resources they need to overcome challenges and succeed in a safe, welcoming and inclusive environment.

Accommodations for Pregnancy & Related Conditions
Pursuant to Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, CSUCI is required to treat pregnancy, childbirth and other related conditions in the same manner and using the same policies or practices that would apply for students with other temporary medical conditions. CSUCI offers reasonable adjustments to those students who miss class due to a medical condition and those who miss school because of pregnancy or childbirth are entitled to the same reasonable adjustments. Such adjustments may include:
- Not penalizing a student for any absences the student’s treating physician deems medically necessary.
- Returning students to the same academic and extracurricular status as before their medical absence or leave. This may include allowing students to earn back the credit or make up missed work.
- Making reasonable adjustments to a regular educational program such as a larger desk or frequent trips to the restroom.
- Working with the student should there be a pregnancy-related emergency such as going into labor, mandated bed rest, post-surgery recovery, etc.
- Ability to take missed exams and extensions on assignments
Requests for adjustments should be made to the Title IX & Inclusion office by utilizing the Request button above, or by e-mailing Title IX. Initial contact and discussion with your professor is strongly recommended.
Accommodations for Nursing & Lactation
CSUCI is committed to supporting students who choose to breastfeed. Students planning to breastfeed or express milk will be afforded reasonable break times without penalty during CSUCI programs and activities, including class. It is encouraged that requests for reasonable adjustments be discussed with professors if those breaks are during class, but students should also feel free to e-mail Title IX & Inclusion.
As a general matter, a student may also choose to breastfeed during class so long as it has been determined that it is reasonable (i.e., safe and not disruptive) for the student to do so while participating in the course. Students who breastfeed during class are subject to the same expectations of all other members of the class with respect to preventing disruptions to the learning environment.
