Research enhances a student’s undergraduate experience. It gives students opportunities to build subject-matter expertise and work collaboratively – or independently – with their peers and experienced faculty members.

In addition, undergraduate research advances students’ communication and analytical skills through hands-on learning in and outside the laboratory to find solutions to challenges. Participating in research lets students learn alongside faculty and fellow students and forge new skill sets in various environments. Studies show students who participate in research earn better grades and are more likely to graduate.

Transferable skills learned through student research that can be used in graduate/doctoral studies and on the job include:

  • Collaboration
  • Critical thinking
  • Data analysis
  • Networking
  • Organizing information from multiple, reliable sources
  • Poster creation
  • Problem-solving
  • Project management
  • Public speaking
  • Taking initiative
