Crime Alerts and Timely Warning Notices

Yesterday, the CI Police Department issued a timely warning notification to the campus community, alerting you to the fact that a robbery was reported to have occurred on Camarillo Street at Lewis Road, on public property immediately adjacent to the CI Campus. As of this morning, the only additional information to report is an enhanced description of the suspect. The suspect is described as being a white male in his early 20’s, approximately 5 feet 8 inches tall with a thin build. He had shaggy, shoulder-length, dirty blond hair, an unkempt appearance, and he was barefoot. He was last seen wearing blue jeans and an unknown-colored T-shirt.

On Monday, May 13, 2013, at approximately 5:15 p.m. deputies with the Camarillo Police Department received a report of a robbery that had occurred at the book buy-back van approximately 4:45 p.m. The van was parked on Camarillo Street at Lewis Road, on public property immediately adjacent to the CI Campus.

It was reported that a male subject approached the book buy-back vendor and demanded money. The subject then physically assaulted the vendor, took personal property, and fled on foot, southbound on Camarillo Street. No weapons were involved in the robbery.

The suspect is described as being a white male in his early 20’s, approximately 5 feet 8 inches tall with a thin build. The subject had dirty blond shaggy hair, an unkempt appearance, and he was barefoot.

To protect yourself from becoming the victim of robbery, take steps to be seen as an undesirable target. Robberies mostly occur during the hours of darkness. Robbers tend to like isolation, prefer lone victims, good escape routes, and few witnesses in addition to a good cash score. Consider the following:

• Be aware of your surroundings. Walk with a purpose, with your head up, and looking around.
• Be conscious of people just “hanging around” anywhere, especially near pay phones, public rest rooms, building entrances, etc.
• Be aware of people around you when you when using an ATM. When you go to a bank, restaurant, convenience store, etc., do not openly display large sums of cash.
• Be cautious when wearing “flashy” jewelry or carrying valuable items.
• Stay in lighted areas at night. The robber does not want to be seen.
• Stay with the crowd. There is safety in numbers.
• Vary your routine. Don’t do the same thing at exactly the same time every day.
• If someone watches you closely, follows you, or otherwise acts suspiciously, get to a well-lit populated area and contact the police.
