Welcome,
Thank you for your interest in Cal State Channel Islands and for navigating to this page. I hope you find the information below helpful. This is a very significant year in the life of the University for a number of reasons, most importantly because 2007 is the year California State University Channel Islands, the newest of the 23 California State University campuses, received initial accreditation from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC).
The first on-site visit to our campus by a team of WASC representatives took place in February of 2003, followed by three more site visits in ’04, ’06 and ’07. Thus, the University received accreditation in the shortest possible time. And, thanks to the extraordinary work of a great number of people under the superb leadership of our Accreditation Liaison Officer, Dr. Dennis Muraoka, the University was granted accreditation for the maximum amount of time allowable under WASC regulations. Not coincidentally, our status as an accredited university is retroactive to May 19, 2007, the day our first full four-year class of students graduated. This has provided them with transcripts that include the sentence at the top of this page, stating that they have graduated from an accredited university.
Another reason this is a significant year for the University is that all four Mission Centers are up and running. Our four Centers—the Center for Integrative Studies, the Center for International Affairs, the Center for Multicultural Learning and Engagement, and the Center for Civic Engagement and Service Learning—constitute “the four pillars of the educational program of the University,” and serve as the guardians of the University Mission. I believe that our four Centers will play increasingly important roles in the lives of our faculty and students as the years progress. Click here to see an illustration that represents one way of looking at the strength and the importance of the Mission Centers.
I am also pleased to report that we have added three new majors for the ’07-’08 academic year in our ever-growing array of program offerings. They are Communication, Early Childhood Studies, and Nursing, giving us a total of 19 majors. In addition, our M.A. degree in Education is moving from Extended Education to state support.
As usual, there is a good deal of construction on campus, as we anticipate there will be for the foreseeable future. The construction of the John Spoor Broome Library has continued throughout the summer, and remains on schedule for its grand opening in Spring 2008; the new student housing facility, Santa Cruz Village, is also on schedule for occupancy this fall; and the Campus Bookstore has moved to its new home in the Town Center.
Finally, we recruited 16 new tenure track faculty this year, bringing the total number of tenure track faculty to 86. This cadre of faculty is an outstanding group of teacher-scholars who will join us this coming year as we continue to build what is sure to become a destination campus, not only for Ventura County and the rest of California, but for the nation and the world.
