The School of Arts & Sciences is pleased to provide six Arts & Sciences Faculty Excellence Awards for AY 23-24.

  • Excellence in Teaching
  • Excellence in Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activities
  • Excellence in Service
  • Inclusive Excellence
  • Excellence in Mentoring
  • Dean’s Award for Collaborative Achievement*

* The Dean’s Award for Collaborative Achievement is awarded at the discretion of the Dean. There is no application for this award.

The Faculty Excellence Awards are open to all faculty in Arts & Sciences, regardless of rank. Applications are encouraged from a diverse pool of faculty. Individuals who received a Faculty Excellence Award in AY 22-23 are not eligible to receive an award in AY 23-24. 

This initiative has the goal of recognizing and rewarding faculty for their Service; Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activities; Teaching Effectiveness; Mentorship; and Culturally Responsive and Inclusive Practices. The initiative is linked to the A&S Vision, Commitment 5.4, "Implement a system of formal recognition and rewards for faculty using effective, high impact, and transformative learning practices."

Award Descriptions

Excellence in Teaching Award: Candidates for this award should show significant accomplishments in teaching.

Excellence in Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activities Award: Candidates for the scholarship award should show substantial contributions to their field through their scholarship, research, and creative accomplishments.

Excellence in Service Award: Candidates for this award should show exemplary participation and accomplishments in professional, university, or community service, beyond that required as part of their job.

Inclusive Excellence Award: Candidates for this award should show exemplary engagement in activities that promote the value of diversity and the importance of equity and inclusiveness in the School of Arts & Sciences, University, community, and professional fields.

Excellence in Mentoring Award: Faculty members nominated for this award will be evaluated based on their long-term commitment to mentoring and advising faculty colleagues.

Nomination Process

Nominations must be submitted by midnight on Friday, February 9, 2024. Nominations should be submitted through the nomination survey and should consist of the name of the nominator and nominee, which award the individual is being nominated for, and a brief nomination statement (up to 250 words) on why the individual is being nominated for the award. Both self-nominations and nominations by a faculty colleague are accepted. Please consider nominating an exceptional colleague or yourself for recognition!

Nominees for an award will be contacted and encouraged to submit a full application by midnight on Friday, March 1, 2024.

Application Process

Faculty who have been nominated for an award or submitted a self-nomination will be sent an email inviting them to submit a full application. Applications must be complete and must consist of the following:

  • An application letter (up to 1000 words maximum) which can include quotes from students or colleagues, and
  • Applicant's vita or resume (3 page maximum, tailored to the specific award)

Recipients of the Faculty Excellence Awards will be announced at Arts and Sciences Welcome Back Meeting in August 2024.

Award Guidelines

  • Recipients of an AY 22-23 Faculty Excellence Award are not eligible to apply/be nominated for an award in AY 23-24. No individual may receive the same award twice within a five-year period.
  • $1000 will be awarded to each award recipient as either cash, or as research funds to be used in next 2 years, at the discretion of the awardee.
  • Documentation for the Excellence in Teaching Award is limited to the past five years of teaching.
  • Nominations should come from a faculty member. Students who are interesting in seeing a faculty member be recognized with one of these awards should contact the Department Chair for the program. Nominees are encouraged to review the Faculty Excellence Awards rubric to ensure that their application meets the criteria to be used in evaluating applications.
