Overview of the Spotlight on Research Seed Grants Program

School of Arts and Sciences faculty members are invited to apply for seed grants for faculty research, scholarship, and creative activity projects to be conducted during the 2024-2025 academic year (including Summer 2024). This new initiative has the goal of increasing the visibility of faculty scholarly and creative activities, stimulating ongoing and future faculty scholarly and creative projects, and encouraging cross-disciplinary and interdisciplinary collaborations centered around scholarly and creative activities. The initiative is linked to the A&S Collective Vision, Commitment 1.2, “Provide a supportive and developmental environment for faculty to achieve meaningful and fulfilling careers.”

Recipients of a Spotlight on Research Seed Grant will receive a $1000 seed grant that can be used during Summer 2024 and the 2024-25 Academic Year.

For 2024-2025, there will be up to four seed grants awarded by the Spotlight on Research Committee (SRC).

Eligibility and Conditions

Grant proposals may be submitted by individual faculty members. Seed grants are flexible and may be used for materials/books, travel to conduct research or visit archives, research participation incentives, publication charges, or other support to obtain preliminary results. Alternatively, funds can be transferred to the faculty member’s department for the direct support of scholarly/creative works.

As a condition of receiving a seed grant, recipients must be willing to participate in a panel presentation (approximately 15 minutes) in the Spring 2025 Spotlight on Research event (date to be announced).  Awardees will also be expected to submit a short annual report on how their Seed Grant affected their project.  Only one grant proposal per faculty member will be accepted.

Members of the SRC are not eligible to submit proposals for a Seed Grant.

Proposal Guidelines

A successful proposal conveys a complete and well thought-out plan for how the seed grant, if awarded, would allow the faculty member to stimulate new research, scholarship, or creative activity or further work already in progress.

Proposals should include the following:

• SummaryofProposedProject and Anticipated Outcomes 
• Impact of the Proposed Project on the Faculty Member, Campus, and/or Discipline 
• Description of How the Seed Grant Would Stimulate New or Further ExistingResearch, Scholarly, or Creative Activity 
• Timeline for Carrying Out the Proposed Project 
• Detailed Budget that is Aligned with the Project Outcomes 

Proposals should be limited to 500 words and uploaded as a PDF onto the Qualtrics application.

Submission

The proposal package must be submitted by midnight Friday, April 5, 2024. 

Submit an application for an A&S Spotlight on Research Seed Grant

All proposal documents must be submitted as attachments in PDF format using the portal.

If awarded, faculty recipients must commit to participating in the Spring 2025 Spotlight on Research event (date to be determined) to present their projects. Projects need not be completed by that date, but recipients are expected to discuss their progress to date and future plans.

An up-to-date curriculum vitae should be provided with the proposal.
