Extended University delivers an important need in the community for continuing access to higher education and a commitment to lifelong learning. EU offers special session degree programs, credit and non-credit courses, and certificate programs. Extended University serves professionals throughout their career life cycle with job skills training, career upgrades, professional certifications, and accelerated courses of study. We provide a mix of evening and weekend schedules, distance-learning, and classroom locations throughout Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties. Extended University affords opportunities to all individuals of all ages pursuing to enrich their professional, personal and cultural lives. 

For those who have not been admitted to the University, students can enroll in regularly scheduled degree-credit courses through Open University.

OLLI (Osher Lifelong Learning Institute)

Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) was established at CSUCI in 2004 offering high quality academic courses to adults aged 50 and better seeking continued intellectual stimulation and knowledge. Courses do not carry academic credit, and does not require tests, homework, or grading.  The OLLI program is learning for the joy of learning.  The OLLI program offers 20 or more courses during each of the fall, spring, and summer sessions. Courses are taught by CSUCI faculty, retired college and university faculty, and experts within their field.  Each session has balanced and varied program courses offered in the arts, music, social and natural sciences, literature, and history. 

Courses meet on weekday mornings and afternoons in-person throughout Ventura and LA Counties and on Zoom.

Open University

Open University provides an opportunity for prospective students who are not currently admitted to CSUCI to enroll in courses offered by the regular University.

  • Begin working towards a degree: Have you missed the deadline for admission? Do you want to improve your grade point average to better qualify for admittance? 
  • Sample a field or possible career: Are you thinking of a career change? Do you want to examine a new field before enrolling in a degree program?
  • Professional and personal enrichment: Do you want to update your professional training in specific fields? Interested in learning more about a particular subject for your own personal growth?
  • Get a second chance: Open University provides past CSUCI students who have been academically disqualified with an opportunity to raise their CSUCI GPA to apply for reinstatement.

CSU Channel Islands' Open University program allows enrollment in regular University credit classes on a "space available" basis, subject to the approval of the instructor and Academic Affairs. Check the CSUCI Schedule of Classes for class meeting times and location. The registration process is easy. Admission to the University is not required, and the same fees apply to everyone.

Students may apply for up to 24 units taken through Open University toward a baccalaureate degree. Grades received through this program will be factored into your grade point average at CSUCI.  Up to 9 units of Open University credit may be applied to a CSUCI graduate degree. Units earned through Open University may not be applied toward the 30-unit residency requirement.

Please note that space nor enrollment are guaranteed.

Open University is NOT available to:

  • Matriculated students (those admitted for the current semester)
  • Any student with financial, academic or disciplinary holds placed on their account by CSUCI. 
  • International students who need to obtain I-20 or DS2019, instead please contact the International Programs Office at international@csuci.edu.
