The Communication & Public Relations team supports the campus with design and visual communication for campus events, activities, and University-wide initiatives; provides communication for employees, external constituents, and the general public; oversees emergency and crisis communication for the campus community; serves as liaison between the University and news media; manages various social media platforms; oversees CSUCI's News Center; and produces the University's bi-annual magazine, Channel.

    Nancy Covarrubias Gill

    Nancy Covarrubias Gill, M.P.A. serves as the Associate Vice President for Communication & Public Relations. Within this role, Nancy:

    • Assists with executive communication strategy, development, and management of campus-wide internal and external communication including crisis and emergency communication, public relations.
    • Serves as the University’s Public Information Officer (PIO) and spokesperson for news media inquiries and directs communication to the campus and external community during emergencies or crises.
    • Leads the Communication & Public Relations team to create and distribute communication, which includes graphic design, photography/videography, publications, social media, news media relations, and online News Center.

  • Kristin Steiner

    Kristin Steiner currently serves as Director of University Communication. Within this role, Kristin:

    • Manages and creates content for the University’s primary social media platforms and provides guidance to others on campus who are managing their social media accounts.
    • Oversees posts for the University’s online News Center, posts and distributes University news releases, and manages requests for postings on campus bulletin boards.
    • Assists during campus emergencies by providing direction and communication for the University’s Emergency Public Inquiry Center, which includes communication on the website, CSUCI Alerts, telephone information hotline, and coordinating with other staff and external vendors assisting during campus emergencies.

  • Joanna Murphy

    Joanna Murphy serves as Associate Director of Communication. Within this role, Joanna:

    • Manages campus requests for design and visual communication including graphic design, photography, and videography, as well as serving as lead graphic designer for high-profile University materials.
    • Oversees the University’s brand guidelines for logos, stationery, and licensing, including advising campus constituencies on the use of logos; reviews logo requests for apparel sold at the campus bookstore including licensing of such merchandise, and manages trademark registrations for all official University logos.

  • Jessica Chiang

    Jessica Chiang

    Jessica Chiang serves as a Graphic Designer. Within this role, Jessica:

    • Creates and produces a variety of artistic graphic design collateral for various University audiences and purposes, including original illustrations or designs, typographical format, effective use of colors, tone, and harmony, and incorporates various assets including photographs, illustrations, diagrams, text, charts, graphics, slides, and computer animation for final production.
    • Oversees coordination and production of collateral with a variety of vendors and printers.
    • Supports strategic initiatives and branding identities through graphic design.

    • Writes news releases and facilitates interviews between campus community members and journalists.
    • Pitches positive stories about the University to local, regional and national media, with an emphasis on student and faculty research, activities, awards, and student, faculty, or staff profiles.
