Aligning Learning and Academic Success
Project ALAS was a partnership among CSU Channel Islands, Oxnard College, Ventura College and Santa Barbara City College. ALAS constituted an expansion of CSUCI’s ongoing efforts to build a regional approach to providing meaningful access to higher education for an underserved Latinx population. The project’s initiatives focused on “pipeline” initiatives: access, retention and transfer using high impact practices (HIP). This regional network focused on improving the transfer process from 2-year to 4-year institutions. This network initiated an annual Transfer Success Summit and cross-institutional faculty fellows program. Areas of focus included aligning high impact teaching and learning practices, policies and systems to “one degree.”
ALAS partners involved several activities: the long-lasting relationships across campuses; writing equity conference, groups of cross-discipline faculty from partner institutions working together to improve student success and student transfer and the growing attention paid to counseling and advising. These strategies and others helped to build a framework for partners to focus on transfer success.
