Purpose, Aims and Objectives
Purpose
The purpose of CI Disability Accommodations and Support Services (DASS) is to encourage a learning community in and beyond the classroom that promotes academic excellence, success, personal development and self-advocacy skills that will empower and support students with physical, learning or psychological disabilities so that they can participate fully in, and benefit equitably from, the University experience to realize their academic and personal potential.
Responsibility
CI Disability Accommodations and Support Services (DASS) is designated by the University to obtain, review and maintain records of a student’s disability as they pertain to classroom accommodations. DASS offers accommodations and resources for students who choose to identify their disability to the University, provide verifying documentation and register for services. Academic accommodations are provided based on disability-related needs under sections 504 and 508 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990.
Aims
Aim 1: To provide accommodations that will assist students to overcome barriers and reduce the impact of their disability on their college experiences.
Aim 2: To promote awareness of the needs and capabilities of students with disabilities among students, faculty, staff, administration and the surrounding community.
Objectives
Objective 1: To determine student needs and improve program quality through ongoing assessment of Disability Accommodations and Support Services (DASS).
Objective 2: To assist students with disabilities in the admissions and enrollment process.
Objective 3: To provide quality and timely services to students in the areas of counseling, alternative media and alternative testing.
Objective 4: To provide opportunities for students to build and practice community.
