Kevin Bock in a beekeeping suit working with bees May 27, 2025 – Kevin Bock returned to college in his mid-twenties with a desire to contribute more to the world than he felt was possible in his job at the time. Feeling driven to do more, Bock enrolled at CSUCI and chose to major in Biology – a choice that would change his future and help him reach his goal of doing more in this world.

By way of an organic chemistry course, combined with a love for Dungeons & Dragons, Bock decided to explore making mead (an ancient style of wine made from honey). Given that honey can be expensive, he decided to take a beekeeping course at CSUCI, where he met Professor of Biology Ruben Alarcon. Thinking the course would be an easy way to learn about bees and get honey, Bock ended up falling in love with bees and all things beekeeping.

At last week’s CSU Board of Trustees meeting, one of the featured videos played during the meeting included a story about Bock (’19 B.S. Biology) who has continued volunteering with Professor of Biology Ruben Alarcón to help students care for our bees.  Hear the rest of Bock’s story and learn more about his and Professor Alarcón’s work.
