Oct. 9, 2023 – Research and Sponsored Programs is pleased to announce that the U.S. Department of Education has awarded $97,129 to Professors Michelle Dean, Luz Herrera, and Tiina Itkonen's project entitled “Proyecto SABER (Special and Bilingual Educator Retention).”

Proyecto Special and Bilingual Educator Retention (SABER) is an integrated post-baccalaureate ES credential and an add-on bilingual authorization (BLA), with an advanced course on positive behavioral interventions and supports (PBIS).

Obtaining a federal grant to address the critical shortage of highly qualified multilingual (Spanish and English) special educators will advance PIs scholarly agenda and is in line with university mission. Proyecto SABER will create sustainable pathways for university students from historically marginalized and oppressed groups to enter and complete the ES and BLA teacher preparation programs and earn the requisite credential and authorization.
