General Education

The CSU General Education Policy (EO 1100) establishes a common understanding of the requirements for California State University (CSU) General Education (GE) and provides guidance for the certification of courses completed by transfer students at institutionally accredited colleges or universities.

To ensure compliance with CSU General Education Policy (EO 1100), CSU Channel Islands has enacted multiple GE related campus policies, including those related to assessment of GE courses.

The Policy on General Education Program and Learning Outcomes  outlines each GE area and explains its Program Learning Outcome (PLO) and associated Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs). Courses certified as GE courses by CI’s General Education Committee all incorporate at least one GE PLO and corresponding SLO that require regular assessment.

The GE Assessment Policy details the schedule for when each GE area courses need to be assessed on a continual 5-year cycle.

The policy requires that all sections of all courses with GE designation participate in GE Assessment by:

  1. Submitting GE Course Syllabi to the repository by the end of the second week of instruction each semester.

  2. Clearly identifying the GE Area the course satisfies and associated GE SLOs in the course syllabus.

  3. Submitting assessment data for their GE PLO(s) via Canvas Outcomes or by emailing the FDAPR by the last day of the semester when grades are due.

Academic Program Chairs with GE courses are responsible for notifying all of their GE instructors of this requirement and Deans are responsible for ensuring that all GE course syllabi for courses in their program are uploaded to the repository on time.

Failure to upload GE course syllabi and participate in assessment activities may result in the loss of the GE designation for the course.

Resources

If you are the instructor for a GE designated course, you can locate your course’s SLOs, including GE SLOs in Curriculog.  Here is a tutorial for how to do that.

You can also add the appropriate GE Learning Outcomes to an assignment rubric using Canvas Outcomes. Here is a tutorial explaining how to do that.

Rubrics for all of the GE SLOs exist on the GE website and in Canvas Outcomes for use by GE instructors in their courses.
