Supporting Student Success and Campus Life

At Cal State Channel Islands (CSUCI), the Associated Students Incorporated (ASI) fee plays a vital role in funding student-led programs, events, and services that create a vibrant and inclusive campus community. ASI supports initiatives like the Student Programming Board, The CI View, ASI Student Government, and club and organization services. It also provides essential funding to departments like Inclusive Student Services, Basic Needs, and Academic Advising, ensuring students have access to resources that enhance their academic and personal success.

Since 2015, the ASI fee has remained at $75 per semester. However, as student needs grow and costs rise, an adjustment is necessary to maintain and improve the programs and services that support our diverse student body.

Why Increase the ASI Fee?

More Resources for Student Clubs and Organizations: Student clubs will have more funding and increased allocations. This means more opportunities for clubs to host events, pursue initiatives, and engage students.

Enhanced Campus Programming: The Student Programming Board will receive increased funding to host more frequent and higher-quality events, creating a more dynamic and enjoyable campus life experience.

Continued Support for Essential Services: Funding will ensure programs like CI’s Cultural Centers, Advising, and Student Success Center remain effective and accessible, supporting students’ academic and personal growth. Initiatives like Weeks of Welcome, the Leadership & Involvement Fair, and First Gen Week will continue to thrive.

Improved Student Spaces and Amenities: With additional funding, ASI can enhance student support spaces, making them more welcoming and functional for studying, socializing, and participating in campus life.

Expanded Leadership Opportunities: More resources will allow for greater support of student leadership initiatives, empowering students to advocate for their peers, shape campus policies, and develop leadership skills.

What Happens If the Fee Doesn’t Increase?

Without an increase, maintaining current programs and services will be challenging. This could lead to:

  • Reduced funding for clubs and organizations.
  • Fewer or lower-quality campus events.
  • Limited support for vital student services like advising and cultural programs.
  • Outdated or insufficient student spaces and amenities.

Pros of Increasing the ASI Fee

  • Financial Aid Coverage: The fee is part of the cost of attendance and may be covered by financial aid for eligible students.
  • Stronger Campus Community: Enhanced funding supports a vibrant campus life with diverse programs and events.
  • Sustained Essential Services: Key resources that support student success and well-being will remain fully funded and accessible.
  • Leadership and Advocacy Opportunities: More funding means more chances for students to take on leadership roles and engage in meaningful advocacy.

Cons of Increasing the ASI Fee

  • Increased Costs: Some students may feel financial pressure, especially if they are ineligible for financial aid.
  • Perceived Unequal Benefits: Students who don’t actively engage in ASI programs may question the fee’s relevance to their experience.

Why This Matters

Investing in the ASI fee is an investment in the student experience. It’s about creating a campus where every student has access to resources, opportunities, and support to succeed and grow. By supporting this fee increase, we can ensure that CSUCI remains a place where students feel empowered to achieve their goals and make lasting memories.
