You may be wondering "Where do I begin even preparing for a study abroad experience?" Our answer, start here by following these simple steps. We recommend starting this process a minimum of one year prior to your desired date of departure.

  1. Attend an info session (online or in-person), or schedule a meeting with a CI study abroad advisor to discuss where to start.

  2. Research and explore your options. Visit CSU IP to see all the programs offered. We recommend doing an "Advanced Search" by your major/minor or desired area of study.

  3. Check your eligibility and verify you meet program prerequisites.
    • Do you meet the minimum GPA requirement? If not, do you have a compelling reason why?
    • Does the program require language or course prerequisites? Remember, course prerequisites can be in progress at the time of application.
    • Is the program open to your class level (sophomore, junior, senior)?

  4. Determine your top three choices by reading the program pages. Consider:
    • Does the program have the academic elements you would want (ex: internships, community service, research)?
    • Does the host university's location sound intriguing (ex: big city vs. rural town)?
    • Would you feel comfortable with the housing options for the program?

  5. Consider the costs. Each program has a "Budget Estimate" towards the top of each program page. Compare the budget estimate of the program to the Cost of Attendance at CI. Evaluate all of the ways you could pay for your study abroad experience (financial aid, scholarships, loans, savings, etc.).

  6. Pay attention to the application deadlines!

  7. Get a passport, if you don't have one already. Your passport must be valid 6 months after your estimated date of return to the US.
