Santa Cruz Village (Student Housing Phase II)
(updated 05/03/06)

Temporary access closure:
Access into the Bell Tower and South Quad via the exterior Western Gateway shall be closed during the daytime until finals week as the building demolition moves to this area. Access is available through the Library Courtyard (Gateway #52 along Ventura Blvd.) Disability access is provided through Bell Tower West at 56 Ventura Blvd. Please observe the temporary signs directing you to the alternate routes. We apologize for any incoveniences and will reopen the gateway entry as soon as the demolition work is completed.

The first building wing at the south end of the project came down last week (April 10-14). What a huge difference this makes! The footings for the building were over 5 feet deep! This is the beginning of a 3-4 week process to demolish the old building structures. In addition, abatement and demolition work inside the buildings that remain continued.
Demolition continues at the next wing along with continuing abatement to safely remove any hazardous materials from the site and demolition of the interiors of buildings that are to remain.
We expect to begin shortly, doing the rough grading to establish building pads and site grades. In the next few weeks, you will notice the remaining buildings being sandblasted to remove the old paint. This is a loud and dirty process. As usual, we will work to minimize the disruption caused by this process.
There will be an increase in construction traffic around campus over the next few weeks as the demolition debris is moved off-site for disposal. Please be careful while walking or driving near construction areas and be aware of the large trucks as they enter and exit the construction site.
As the demolition process moves toward the north end of the project, you may experience an increase in noise level. While we make every effort to minimize the disruption caused by the construction process, we hope that you will bear with us as we continue to expand and improve our campus environment. Thanks for your understanding and support!
