LOCATION: CSUCI South Quad Lawn, One University Drive, Camarillo. The South Quad Lawn is located behind the Bell Tower. From the 101 Freeway take the Las Posas exit and follow the signs to the campus.
PARKING/TRANSPORTATION: Parking is free for the ceremony and will be available on a first-come basis. Free bus transportation is also available to and from the campus from the Camarillo Metrolink station and Oxnard?s Centerpoint Mall at the following times:
- Camarillo Metrolink Station: 9:00 or 9:30 a.m.
- Oxnard Centerpoint Mall: 9:00 a.m.
DATE/TIME: The ceremony will be held Friday, May 23, 2003, and will begin at 10:00 a.m. Graduates are required to check-in at the front of the Bell Tower no later than 9:00 a.m.. This will allow time for instructions, line-up and robing. NO REHEARSAL IS PROVIDED. The ceremony is expected to last approximately 2 hours. A reception with light refreshments will follow the ceremony on the South Quad Lawn.
APPLICATION to PARTICIPATE: [download PDF now] You should have received a packet by mail inviting you to participate in the ceremony; however, if you either did not receive the packet, or would prefer to RSVP on line, please click here to download an Application to Participate (in Adobe Acrobat PDF format). Please print out this form, complete it and return it to the Vice President for Student Affairs office located on the second floor of the Bell Tower no later than April 11, 2003.
WEATHER: The ceremony will be held outdoors on the South Quad Lawn. Seating will be provided. Hats and/or sunglasses are recommended for your guests. Complimentary bottled water will be available.
GUESTS: There is no limit to the number of guests you may invite, but we strongly suggest that guests carpool or take the free bus transportation to the campus. Family members and guests are asked to be seated by 9:45 a.m.
INVITATIONS/ANNOUNCEMENTS: Invitations and/or announcements will be available for purchase in the Student Bookstore or on-line through Josten?s at www.jostens.com. Please visit the bookstore for ordering deadlines or by calling 805-437-8833.
WHAT TO WEAR: Please contact the Student Bookstore between March 19 and March 21 to place your order to rent your cap, gown and/or hood. Remember, you must be robed in a CSUCI issued cap and gown. Candidates not wearing the preferred attire will not be permitted to participate in the ceremony.
- Caps, gowns and hoods will be available after March 21 on a first-come basis only and will NOT be available on the day of the ceremony.
- Master?s candidates will need to remember to order and bring your hood as well.
- Undergraduate and graduate candidate tassels will be worn on the right until such time you are instructed to move them to the left.
- Please leave personal items such as purses, cameras, etc. with family members. There are no secure areas in the South Quad Lawn or the Bell Tower building for you to leave items.
SEQUENCE OF EVENTS: The procession will begin promptly at 10:00 a.m. Candidates will be lined up by degree, discipline and then alphabetical order. The University?s Chief Marshal will lead the procession followed by other University Marshals, the candidates, faculty and then the Platform Party. Once everyone is seated, the program will begin. After the Commencement Speaker has concluded, the master/mistress of ceremonies will announce for the University Marshals to lead their candidates to the stage for their diploma covers. The ceremony is expected to last approximately 2 hours. A reception with light refreshments will follow the ceremony on the South Quad Lawn.
RECEIVING DIPLOMA COVERS: Candidates led by the University Marshals will be called forward. Master?s candidates will have their hoods placed by designated faculty members as they wait to one side of the stage. At the top of the stage ramp, candidates will hand their name cards to the reader (Reader Cards are provided to candidates in the staging area prior to the ceremony). Once the name is read aloud, the candidate will move towards the Dean of Faculty and then to the University President. The diploma cover will be presented to candidates as they shake the President?s hand. A professional photograph will be taken at this time. Candidates will exit the stage, have another photo taken, and then return to their seats. To honor your fellow graduates, please do not leave your seat until the ceremony has concluded.
HONORS: The Honors Convocation ceremony will be held on campus on May 8, 2003, at 7:00 p.m.in Conference Hall One. At that time, honors candidates will be recognized and will receive their sash, cord or medallion. Invitations will be mailed to honors students prior to the event. Please contact Ms. Nancy Covarrubias Gill at 805-437-8456 for questions about the Honors Convocation ceremony.
DIPLOMAS: Upon certification of the degree by the Admission & Records office, diplomas will be ordered and mailed or made available for pick up. Diploma orders take approximately six to eight weeks. Transcripts needed prior to the arrival of the diploma must be requested through the normal procedure.
PHOTOGRAPHY: Family members will not be allowed on the stage to take photographs and may only take photographs in the designated photography area and from audience seats. We ask that family members be courteous of others when taking photos. A professional photographer will be taking pictures of the ceremony. The arrangements to purchase photographs can be made through the photographer at the time of lining up prior to the ceremony. California Candids have been providing commencement photos to candidates in the past and provide quality service. Proofs will be mailed within one week to the address provided on the Reader Card.
FLOWERS: Flowers will be available for purchase in the courtyard located on the east side of the Bell Tower prior to entering the South Quad Lawn area.
STUDENT BOOKSTORE - The CSUCI bookstore will have a tent located in the South Quad for the purchase of CSUCI memorabilia.
SPECIAL ACCOMMODATIONS - Candidates and individuals with disabilities needing accommodation may contact the Disability Accommodation Services office at 805-437-8528 (V/TTY) by May 16, 2003, for assistance. Individuals with a disability placard should make sure it is visible in the vehicle as they enter the campus so that they may be directed to the designated parking lot. Ushers can assist members of your party with special seating in the South Quad, but space will be limited. Guests who requested special seating accommodations should report to the area designated for guests with disabilities. PETS/ANIMALS ? With the exception of Certified Service Animals, pets or animals will NOT be allowed at the ceremony.
FINAL REMINDERS ? The ceremony is meant as a celebration for candidates and their family and guests. With this in mind, all in attendance should be courteous of others.
- All candidates should check-in at the front of the Bell Tower building for robing and line-up instructions.
- Please do not bring horns, canned string, beach balls, etc., as they are not suitable for commencement ceremony.
- Alcohol is NOT allowed at the ceremony. Complimentary bottled water will be available.
- As a matter of courtesy and respect to your fellow graduates, please turn off cell phones, pagers, and remain in your seat until the conclusion of the ceremony.
- Only candidates who applied to graduate will have their names listed in the Commencement Program.
- Students approved to walk early will be listed in the appropriate program according to their graduation semester.
- This is a candidate?s ceremony and not a degree conferral ceremony. Participation in the ceremony does not guarantee degree certification. Candidates who are denied will receive notification by mail from the Admissions & Records office. Denied candidates are required to re-apply for graduation once all degree requirements are met.
