Overview

As the first and only public, four-year university in Ventura County and the only university to open nationwide in 2002, California State University Channel Islands (CSUCI) will celebrate its Grand Opening on August 16, 2002. Committed to academic excellence, community involvement, environmental responsibility and student leadership, CSUCI will open its doors to students on August 26, 2002. The new university will provide students with invaluable opportunities to fulfill their dreams of attaining a 21st century college education. The 670-acre tranquil and historic campus will offer academic excellence and innovative programs to meet the diverse needs of the surrounding communities and businesses.

California State University Channel Islands will provide access to top educational resources and expert faculty directly in the community's backyard. The university will offer a vibrant learning community with a student population that reflects the increasing cultural and ethnic diversity of its surrounding region.

Curriculum

Operating on a semester system, California State University Channel Islands has experienced faculty and a solid academic foundation, and provides students with the opportunity to take classes in multiple disciplines. The university will offer classes in art, biology, business, computer science, English, environmental science and resource management, liberal studies and mathematics. In addition, students may complete coursework to earn teaching credentials.

Campus

California State University Channel Islands is rich in cultural heritage and features historical buildings in a preserved natural coastal landscape. Built in the early part of the 20th century, the 1930's Spanish revival buildings, cloistered hallways, Bell Tower, tiled fountains, open space, and many courtyards offer one of the most beautiful and distinctive university campuses on the West Coast.

Student Body

During Fall 2002, the university will open with approximately 2,300 upper division transfer students onsite for the first year, and will welcome freshmen in Fall 2003. At its full capacity, targeted for 2025, CSUCI will serve more than 15,000 full-time equivalent students.
