Camarillo, Calif., April 1, 2008—The Biology Program at California State University Channel Islands presents “Coming of Aging in America,” a symposium addressing societal and scientific issues related to the aging of the population in the coming decades. The symposium is set for 1 to 5:30 p.m. on Friday, April 4. The symposium is free and open to the public and the event will be held on the CSUCI campus in the Aliso Hall Auditorium.

The symposium will feature the following speakers: Lynn Daucher, Director of the California Department of Aging; Gilbert Rishton, Ph.D., Director of the Channel Islands Alzheimer’s Institute; Rita Effros, Ph.D., of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the University of California Los Angeles; Steven Clarke, Ph.D., of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at UCLA; and Anne Stirling Hastings, Ph.D., a psychologist in our community.

During the past few years, the Biology Program has regularly hosted symposia on a wide range of topics. Last fall, “Understanding the Channel Islands: An Interdisciplinary approach” discussed environmental issues. Previous symposium topics have been “Stem Cells: From Here to Eternity,” “Invaders of the Human Body,” “Age of the Genome,” “Biology of Fat,” and “Go Beyond Petroleum: Plant Biotechnology and Alternative Fuels.” These events have been well attended by members of the campus and the local communities.

Limited parking is available on campus and is $6 for a daily permit. Free parking is available at the Camarillo Metrolink Station/Lewis Road parking lot in Camarillo with shuttle service to and from the campus until 10 p.m. Riders should board the CSUCI Vista bus. There will be way-finding signage on campus directing attendees to parking and the event.
