Camarillo, Calif., June 26, 2008—Architectural tours of the recently opened John Spoor Broome Library at California State University Channel Islands are now available for the public. The docent-led tours are scheduled every Monday at 10 and 11 a.m. and every Friday at 12 and 1 p.m.

The tours begin in the main lobby of the library and traverse the 137,000-square-foot facility focusing on the one-of-a-kind architectural attributes of the building. The John Spoor Broome Library was designed by world renowned architect Sir Norman Foster of Foster + Partners in the United Kingdom.

Foster was born in Manchester in 1935. After graduating from Manchester University School of Architecture and City Planning in 1961 he won a Henry Fellowship to Yale University, where he gained a Master’s Degree in Architecture. Award winning architect Foster and his firm’s work can be seen throughout the world. Just some of Foster + Partners  projects include: 200 Greenwich Street, World Trade Center, New York, N.Y; Hearst Headquarters, New York, N.Y.; Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C.; Millennium Bridge, London, United Kingdom; Beijing Airport, Beijing, China; the Clark Center, Stanford University, California; and the Reichstag, New German Parliament, Berlin, Germany.

The John Spoor Broome Library is an integration of existing structures—Mission Revival and Spanish Colonial Revival architecture originally built in the 1930s—with clean lines and the open space of glass, metal, and concrete. Construction of the new library began in October of 2005 and the facility opened in April of 2008.

The tours are complimentary. Private tours for groups are available and require advance reservations. Limited parking is available on campus and is $6 for a daily permit. Free parking is available at the Camarillo Metrolink Station/Lewis Road parking lot in Camarillo with shuttle service to and from the campus. Riders should board the CSUCI VISTA Bus and the fare is $1 each way.
