Camarillo, Calif., Jan. 25, 2010 – The Martin V. Smith School of Business & Economics at CSU Channel Islands (CI) and the World Affairs Council-Central California Coast are sponsoring a presentation by Dr. Abraham Lowenthal, “Global California,” on Thursday, Jan. 28.  A reception will be held at 5:30 p.m. followed by a presentation at 6 p.m. at the Martin V. Smith Center for Integrative Decision-Making at the CSU Channel Islands campus.  Admission is free; students are invited and should bring their identification card.

Dr. Lowenthal will be talking on themes in his new book, Global California: Rising to the Cosmopolitan Challenge.  Lowenthal contends that California, with an economy larger than that of all but eight nations in the world, must build is ‘cosmopolitan capacity’ to respond to today’s global opportunities and challenges.

Lowenthal will describe how California has a huge international presence in the entertainment industry, agriculture, high technology and biotech, the knowledge-based economic sectors, and other fields, but has failed to think strategically about its global opportunities.  “Little systematic policymaking has been done over the years about the issues posed for California by world trends, threats and opportunities,” says Lowenthal.  In his presentation he will sketch out future directions.

Abraham Lowenthal is professor of international relations at the University of Southern California and past president of the Pacific Council on International Policy. There will be an opportunity for book purchase and signing at the reception and after the presentation.
