Camarillo, Calif. April 29, 2010 - The second annual CSU Channel Islands (CI) Faculty-Student Research Forum will be held Saturday, May 8, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the John Spoor Broome Library on campus.  After registration, which begins at 9:15 a.m., there will be a continental breakfast followed by presentations and poster viewing.  The event, sponsored by SAGE Publications and the Division of Academic Affairs, is free and open to the public.

The Forum will highlight research, scholarship, creative activities and grants featuring faculty-student collaborative presentations, faculty research presentations and student research/capstone presentations.  There will be 125 posters on display around the room.  These represent the students’ final projects.

Dr. Ashish Vaidya, Dean of Faculty, stated, “The Faculty-Student Research Forum is a celebration of the collaboration between the students and faculty at CI. We hope that through this forum, the community will gain an appreciation for the work done by faculty who has devoted much of their time and effort in engaging our students in research, scholarship, and creative activities.”

The 31 faculty-student presentations will cover topics as diverse as “Case Studies of a Targeted Reading Intervention in Middle School”, “Earmark: Seniority, Party, and the Politics of the Pork Barrel”, “Clicking for Friendship: Social Network Sites and the Construction of Personhood”, “Game Console Design”, “Why Are We the Obese Nation?”, and “Researching the Braceros of Ventura County”.  The program will provide original research and insights and many choices of topics.

The forum was designed in response to CI’s desire to strengthen research activities as part of its academic foundation and to increase the number of faculty and student research activities.  The faculty-student projects have encouraged community partnerships that enhance the research projects through resources, information and education.  CI recognizes and encourages student and faculty research and scholarly projects, activities that are integral to the CI’s mission and student learning.
