Camarillo, Calif., Feb. 3, 2010 – As part of internationally-acclaimed performer Tim Miller’s visiting artist residency, CSU Channel Islands (CI) students will perform an original collaborative piece created during Miller’s week-long workshop.  The students’ production, entitled, “CI Stories,” will take place Feb. 12 from 5-7 p.m. in Malibu Hall on the CI campus.

Tim Miller will visit performing arts, theatre and history classes and will work with students to help them tell their own personal stories using  movement, coupled with verbal and staging imagery, to craft a piece of performance art.  Miller will lead exercises to help students fully develop their stories. Then, working as an ensemble, participants will weave their stories into a collaborative piece called “CI Stories”.  Tim Miller works to help each student understand that an individual’s experiences are unique and valuable and can be expressed through a thoughtfully constructed piece performance art.

A very important part of Tim Miller’s workshop is learning to think critically. Dr. Catherine Burris, Assistant Professor of Performing Arts, explained that, “Tim is able to open a productive, thought-provoking dialogue where different and often disparate ideas are introduced and there is the freedom to evaluate ideas without necessarily agreeing with them.”  She adds, “In critical thinking you have to learn to live with ambiguity and uncertainty, but often the result of an honest exchange of ideas is social change and understanding.”

CI students, faculty, staff, and the general public are invited to attend the production of “CI Stories” and the admission is free.
