Camarillo, Calif. April 21, 2010 – CSU Channel Islands (CI) will host the 2010 Summer Institute for students of Oxnard College.  The institute is in its second year and is funded by the Department of Education’s HSI STEM (Hispanic Serving Institution Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) grant.  It will be conducted on campus from May 24 through June 18.

The program will accept 60 students who will have the opportunity to study with faculty research mentors for three weeks.  They will enroll in one of two classes, Forensic Science (CHEM 343) or The Biosphere (BIOL 335).

There will be an open house informational meeting for participating students in early May. The program is designed to encourage Oxnard College students to pursue STEM majors and to transfer to a four-year university. CI students will serve as peer mentors.

In the forensics class there will be guest specialists in the field of forensic science who will lecture students on specific topics.  The students will be able to investigate “crime scenes” set up on the CI campus and then analyze the evidence they collect using forensic science techniques.

The Biosphere class is lecture-based and will have a number of CI faculty members as guest lecturers in the fields of biology, geology and physics. All students will share professional development sessions.

One special treat for all students will be an overnight on the Tall Ship Bill of Rights, docked in the Channel Islands Harbor.  Groups of 20 will go on an overnight research trip, during which they will analyze Geographic Information System (GIS) and oceanographic data to gain a perspective on the health of the ocean.

At the end of the 3-week session students will present their research results in poster form.
