Camarillo, CA. Aug. 17, 2010 – CSU Channel Islands (CI) will welcome Dr. Alan Trounson, President of the California Institute of Regenerative Medicine (CIRM), to campus on Tuesday, Sept. 7, 2010.  A 5:30 p.m. reception will precede his address at 6 p.m.

With the passage of Proposition 71 in 2004, CIRM was created to support stem cell research in California and authorized the sale of general obligation bonds to provide $3 billion for stem cell research and research facilities. These funds were to be administered by CIRM.

As President of CIRM, Trounson will focus Tuesday’s presentation, entitled “Stem Cell Science: A Revolution in Medicine,” on the latest advancements in stem cell research and medicine and the impact these discoveries have on people’s daily lives.

Prior to joining CIRM, Trounson held various positions at Monash University, a public university based in Melbourne, Australia. Among other positions, he was the Professor of Stem Cell Sciences and Director of the Monash Immunology and Stem Cell Laboratories.  He founded the National Biotechnology Centre of Excellence, also known as Australian Stem Cell Centre.  In 2003, he was awarded a Personal Chair as Professor of Stem Cell Sciences.  A Fellow of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and an Honorary Fellow of the Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, Trounson was awarded an honorary doctorate by the faculty of medicine at the University of Brussels.

Trounson was one of the first in the field of in vitro fertilization and various reproductive technologies. He worked in the diagnosis of inherited genetic disease in pre-implantation embryos and was involved in the discovery and production of human embryonic stem cells and their ability to be directed to various uses.

The presentation, organized and sponsored by the Master of Science in Biotechnology and Bioinformatics Program offered through CI’s Extended University, is free and open to the public.  To make a reservation please contact Jennifer Ormond at 805-437-3203.
