Camarillo, Calif., Oct. 18, 2010 – CSU Channel Islands (CI) recently received the welcome news that the 2010-2011 California state budget restored $199 million to the CSU system, plus providing an additional $60.6 million for enrollment growth. This marks the first restoration of state funding to the CSU since 2007.
The last two years’ budget cuts forced all CSU campuses to severely reduce enrollment. However, with this news, CI is announcing that it will be accepting applications for spring 2011 enrollment from upper division transfer students and teaching credential students.
Jane Sweetland, Dean of Enrollment, stated that, “We have received 600 applications from transfer students for spring already and will be contacting those applicants to remind them to submit a transcript so that the admissions office can process their applications.” CI continues to accept applications from credential students and has opened Mentor, so that additional transfer students can apply online at www.calstate.edu/apply. Online applications for spring term must be completed by midnight, October 31.
Sweetland mentioned they hoped to enroll 400 students but would accommodate everyone who meets the requirements by adding new classes if necessary. “It is wonderful news for CI as it means we will be able to accommodate hundreds of our local transfer students. We are now funded for growth,” she said.
Ginger Reyes, Director of Admissions & Recruitment, enthusiastically pointed out, “It is great news because now students don’t have to wait a year. They can enroll for the spring and make faster progress toward achieving their academic goals. It was very upsetting having to tell students that they had to wait. We are really excited about this news.”
Joanne Coville, Vice President for Finance & Administration said, “We are delighted that the state has given the CSU system money to restore student enrollment. While our campus has not had to reduce its student enrollment, the system has agreed to fund some additional students at CI and we are very happy to have the financial wherewithal to now be able to admit more students.”
Jane Sweetland’s comment to students is, “If you qualify, apply. We would love to welcome you to campus in the spring.”
