Camarillo, Calif., Nov. 5, 2010 - The CSU Channel Islands (CI) History, Chicana/o Studies, Performing Arts and Spanish programs have announced a series of events commemorating the bicentennial of Mexican Independence and the centennial of the Mexican Revolution.

“Echoes of Nationalism and Revolution” will run from Nov. 15 to 19, with all events taking place on the CI campus.  The events are free and open to the public.
Limited parking is available on campus. A daily permit is $6. Free parking is available at the Camarillo Metrolink Station/Lewis Road parking lot in Camarillo with bus service to and from the campus. Riders should board the VISTA Bus to the campus; the fare is $1 each way. Buses arrive and depart from the Camarillo Metrolink Station every 30 minutes from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Friday. Nov. 8-19, Broome Library Exhibition Hall
The (R)EVOLUTION Commemorative Calendar Exhibit by Marie Gregorio-Oviedo, photographer, with support from Clinicas del Camino Real, Inc.  (R)evolution indicates the evolution from revolution of the warriors of yesteryear to the community activists of present day. The exhibit commemorates the centennial of the Mexican Revolution of 1910, featuring photos on canvas of local Latino individuals whose stories, activism, volunteerism, and philanthropy make them the Guerrilleros de la Comunidad (Community Activists) of today.  Those featured in (R)EVOLUTION  are depicted in period costumes and scenes that may have taken place during the 1910 Mexican Revolution.

A lecture by Assistant Professor Spanish at Portland State University, entitled, “In War and Peace, from Documentary to Artistic Cinema:  The Mexican Revolution on Film (1911-1935)”

Tuesday evening, Nov. 16, 6 to 8 p.m., Broome Library
A screening and discussion of a film entitled “Walkout.” Sponsored by CI’s MEChA student club.

Wednesday, Nov. 17, 12 to 2 p.m. Broome Library
A film screening and discussion of “A Place Called Chiapas,” sponsored by CI’s Student Historians’ Association,

Wednesday, Nov. 17, 4:30 to 6 p.m., Broome Library
A lecture by Dr. Eric Van Young, Professor of History at University of California San Diego, “Mexico 1810/1910:  How Different Were the Two Revolutions?”

Thursday, Nov. 18, 4:30 to 5:45 p.m., Broome Library
A dramatic reading of "Entre Pancho Villa y una Mujer Desnuda," performed by Spanish and Performing Arts Students, with Spanish-language direction by Dr. Steven Clark, Stage direction by Dr. Luda Popenhagen and Steven Clark, followed by student-led panel discussion.  This will be followed by a reception with (R)EVOLUTION Commemorative Calendar Project participants from 6 to 7:30 PM.

Friday, Nov. 19, 2 to 6 p.m., Student Union Courtyard
A celebration, Fiesta Patria, with refreshments and entertainment including ballet folkórico, Mexico City reggae selector RasJuan, Ruff Roots from Santa Paula, and Mariachi Costa del Sol.
