Camarillo, Calif., Nov. 16, 2010 – CSU Channel Islands (CI) will celebrate the groundbreaking for a new entrance road to the University on Friday, Nov. 19 at 10:30 a.m. on Santa Barbara Avenue. The public is invited to attend the ceremony.

This project has been anticipated since 2007 when Ventura County moved Lewis Road to the west side of Calleguas Creek and constructed a bridge to serve as a new primary entrance road for the campus.  The new entrance road will start at the bridge over Calleguas Creek, located north of Potrero Road and approximately a mile and a half south of the campus’ current primary entrance off University Drive. The project is scheduled to be completed by summer of 2012.

The new entrance road will be a four lane divided road with a wide landscaped median.  The length of the road will be almost a mile from Lewis Road across a new bridge over Long Grade Canyon Creek to  the central portion of the campus.

“Our concern has been for the safety of students, employees and visitors to our campus,” said President Richard Rush.  “With this improvement Lewis Road vehicle traffic will flow more smoothly, sustainable transportation like cycling will be supported, deer and other wildlife will be less at risk, and our community will have a safe passage to the University.”

A new pedestrian bridge will connect the north end of the campus to future parking and playfields adjacent to the entrance road.  A portion of the Long Grade Canyon creek bed will be restored to increase the area of riparian habitat which now supports bird nesting. The area and entrance landscaping will serve as an environmental education resource.  Upon completion of the new road the present University Drive will be repaved and will include a new pedestrian and bike path.  It will continue to serve as a secondary pathway to the campus and the primary approach to the University Glen homes.
