Oct. 31, 2017 — A CSU Channel Islands (CSUCI)-based project that supports health and physical education teachers all over the state has received $361,000 annual funding from the Regents of the University of California to continue its work.
The “California Physical Education-Health Project” (CPE-HP) is a collaborative statewide network of physical educators, health educators, classroom teachers and university scholars dedicated to supporting K-12 physical education and health teachers across the state.
“We are tasked with supporting California’s students in learning the content in physical education and health education by providing professional learning and technical assistance for their teachers and schools in both health education and physical education,” said Dianne Wilson-Graham, Executive Director of the California Physical Education-Health Project.
CPE-HP provides support for physical and health education in a number of ways including building regional networks for teachers to support one another, learning together with University faculty, professional learning programs, and a wealth of other resources.
“California’s students have the best opportunity in the country to learn the content of physical education” Wilson-Graham said. “Physical education has mandated instructional minutes, 200 minutes every 10 days for grades 1 through 6 and 400 minutes every 10 days for grades 7 through 12. So our work with teachers is essential in supporting the learning of our students”.
Wilson-Graham said physical education and health teachers who participate in CPE-HP programs are equipped with the latest research, knowledge and skills they need to design and deliver learning experiences for their students, and collaboration with others in their field.
Wilson-Graham said CPE-HP also supports school leaders in learning more about their role in providing leadership for high quality instructional programs at their schools. Since health education and physical education are foundational in students learning to make good decisions throughout their life regarding their health, instructional programs should be rich, and are relevant to almost all aspects of life and learning.
CPE-HP is one of nine statewide projects within the California Subject Matter Projects. Each project has a Statewide Office located at a different university campus. The work of the California Subject Matter projects has been on-going for more than 40 years.
