Cesar ChavezMarch 27, 2020 – CSU Channel Islands’ (CSUCI) Center for Community Engagement (CCE) has a tradition of sending volunteers to do meaningful community service on Cesar Chavez Day, which this year falls on March 31.

In this period of social distancing, Director of CCE Pilar Pacheco and her staff had to redesign the Cesar Chavez Day of Service, one of five days of service conducted by the CCE.

“We were planning to clean up Round Mountain again, but we had to get creative like the rest of the world,” said CCE staff Jennifer Raymond, who designed a virtual Cesar Chavez Day of Service.

Volunteers are invited to participate in the virtual Day of Service by renting the 2014 movie “Cesar Chavez,” available on Hulu, or watching a free six-part documentary series on YouTube called “Chicano! History of the Mexican American Civil Rights Movement.”

Finally, a partnership between Google and the National Park Service has resulted in a virtual tour of the monument to Cesar Chavez from its home in Keene, California, a rare treat with many of the national parks closing because of the pandemic.
