Camarillo, California, October 16, 2002 - The public is invited to attend as California State University Channel Islands hosts the 12th Annual Media Arts Festival from Friday, November 8 through Sunday, November 10, 2002.

CSU Summer Arts established the Media Arts Festival in 1990 to give talented students studying film, video, and the new media within the 23-campus California State University system an opportunity to present their work for critical review. In 2000, the Festival expanded its mission to include helping students bridge the gap between student and working professional.

The Media Arts Festival now includes three days of events and seminars geared toward helping CSU students become better prepared to work in the entertainment and media industries. Presenters scheduled to participate include: Anthony LaMolinara, Animation Director for Spider-Man (the movie); George Dibie, National President of the Cinematographers Guild; Tony Award Winner Joanna Gleason (currently guest starring on The West Wing); and Emmy nominated set designer Keaton Walker.

Media Arts Festival Director Joanne Bartok says, “We are delighted that we have a record number of 180 submissions from CSU students in the following areas: narrative film, animation, music video, experimental, documentary, TV short forms, TV programs, media in community service, and new media. Juries of media industry professionals will select the winner in each category from this outstanding group of submissions.”

Commenting on the festival, Cal State Channel Island's Professor of Art and Chair of the Fine Arts Department, Jack Reilly, strongly encourages the public to attend, “We are honored that Cal State Channel Islands, in our first year, has been chosen for this truly special event. We look forward not only to hosting this talented group of students and esteemed members of the entertainment industry, we are also excited to have our own Cal State Channel Island students represented in this competition. I hope the public takes advantage of this opportunity to see the early work of these students, many of whom may be the movie makers and entertainment industry leaders of tomorrow.”

Two of the events will be free and open to the public. On Friday and Saturday, November 8 and 9 at 7 p.m. there will be screenings of the work of the student finalists.

A wine and cheese reception will follow Saturday evening's screenings and will include an awards presentation.
