Camarillo, California, November 4, 2002 - California State University Channel Islands announced today the appointment of Mario J. “Marty” de los Cobos as the person who will direct its community relations efforts. In this role, de los Cobos will be responsible for the implementation of community and corporate outreach plans, as well as government relations on behalf of CSUCI.

De los Cobos spent more than 30 years of his career in various management and public affairs roles within Southern California Gas Company. For the past year he has served as Vice President of Public Affairs and Development with the Ventura County Community Foundation.

In making the de los Cobos announcement, CSUCI President Richard R. Rush stressed the University's commitment to working closely with the community: “I continually stress to the faculty staff and students of CSUCI that we are here today because the community worked tirelessly for more than 30 years to make this University a reality. We will continue to listen to the people of this County for their input and ideas and will work closely with them in continuing to shape the future of this great University. I am confident that Marty will help ensure that all voices and ideas are heard and valued.”

De los Cobos has a long history of community involvement in the county, including being a past board member of the Ventura County Community Foundation, U. C. Hansen Trust, the Oxnard Chamber of Commerce, the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Ventura County, and El Concilio del Condado de Ventura, where in 1999 he received their Lifetime Achievement Award. He is past chairman of the Ventura County Economic Development Association and the United Way of Ventura County.

Current memberships include the Regional Civic Alliance of Ventura County and the Rotary International Club of Thousand Oaks.

De los Cobos is a graduate of Cal State University, Los Angeles, where he received a Bachelor of Science. He and his wife Eileen reside in Thousand Oaks.
