Camarillo, Calif., June 5, 2003 -- As the newly appointed Facilities Director at California State University Channel Islands, Juan M. Beltranena will be responsible for overseeing more than $70 million in major capital construction projects on campus over the next two years.

"We selected Juan because of his excellent background in university planning and construction, and for his role in developing the new UC Merced campus," said George Dutra, Associate Vice President for Operations, Planning and Construction. "He brings the exact kind of experience and sensitivity to the unique campus environment that we were looking for."

Beltranena has deep experience in design and construction of laboratory buildings and other educational facilities in California, including 15 years at UC Santa Barbara and, most recently, at UC Merced, the newest campus in the UC system expected to open in 2004. His international experience includes projects in Africa, Europe, and South America. In addition, Beltranena was lead engineer for the Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant in San Luis Obispo.

Beltranena, a licensed architect in California and Guatemala, has lectured at UCSB, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, and at universities in Guatemala, where he was a professor of architecture. Among his areas of specialization are the design and planning of bicycle-circulation systems, especially bicycle-path intersections.

At Cal State Channel Islands, Beltranena will be responsible for the construction and renovation of all academic and academic-related buildings on campus.
