Camarillo, Calif., February 24, 2004 -- California State University Channel Islands and the Studio Channel Islands Art Center will host an interdisciplinary symposium on Chinese art and culture. The symposium will take place on Saturday, March 6, and is in connection with “Celebration/Chinese New Year 2004, the Year of the Monkey,” an exhibition of Chinese art that is currently on display at Studio Channel Islands.

Organized by Dr. Irina D. Costache, Associate Professor of Art History at Cal State Channel Islands, the daylong symposium will feature panel discussions with scholars from Cal State Channel Islands, Cal State Long Beach, and artists/art professionals from the local area. Participants will discuss Chinese culture, history, traditions, and art from the point of view of a number of different disciplines (biology, history, and psychology). Included in the list of speakers will be Dr. Kevin Volkan, Professor of Psychology, CSUCI; Dr. Ching-Hua Wang, Professor of Biology, CSUCI; Dr. Nian-Sheng Huang, Associate Professor of History, CSUCI; Dr. Rainer Buschmann, Assistant Professor of History, CSUCI; Panda Kroll, J.D., M.F.A., Lecturer, CSUCI; artist Pat Shia Crabb; and Dr. Hillary Ling, President of the Ventura County Chinese American Association.

The symposium is the closing event for “Celebration/Chinese New Year 2004, The Year of the Monkey,” an exhibition of Chinese art that showcases contemporary and traditional paintings, drawings, ceramics, fiber and three-dimensional works. The exhibition features internationally known artists and educators as well as local Southern California artists.

“This remarkable exhibition will serve as a starting point for the panel's discussion on many different aspects of Chinese culture, values, and thought,” comments Irina D. Costache. “It is the second collaboration of this kind between CSUCI and Studio Channel Islands. It has been very rewarding to develop these projects, which support the mission of the University through interdisciplinary dialogues with colleagues and the community. We are so lucky to have this distinguished panel of experts who will offer a rich variety of perspectives and hope this event will not only attract scholars, but everyone interested in the arts as well.”

The symposium will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Studio Channel Islands Art Center Galleries, located on the campus of Cal State Channel Islands. Admission is $5.00 (free for Studio Channel Islands Art Center members and students, faculty, and staff of the University). A lunch will be available for a small donation to Studio Channel Islands Art Center.
