CAMARILLO, Calif., February 3, 2005 -- New West Symphony Music Director Boris Brott and his father Alexander Brott, composer and founder of McGill Chamber Orchestra, will lead a lecture, “The Art of Creation,” at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, February 17, in the auditorium of the Science Building at California State University Channel Islands (CSUCI). The event is free and open to the public.

Co-sponsored by the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) and CSUCI Student Life, the event will feature the father and son team discussing the creative process and the composition of new works for orchestra. The talk will be hosted by Charles McDermott, artistic administrator of the New West Symphony and an OLLI lecturer. The Symphony will perform an orchestral essay composed by the elder Brott, entitled My Mother, My Memorial, on the New West Symphony Masterpiece Series concert on February 18 at the Oxnard Performing Arts Center and February 19 at the Countrywide Performing Arts Center at the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza. The performances will be conducted by his son. “This is a rare opportunity to learn from two brilliant minds interacting about the process of creating music,” says McDermott.

OLLI offers retired or semi-retired people age 50 and above the opportunity to take eight-week university level courses taught by CSUCI professors and expert members of the community. McDermott is currently teaching the course “From Renaissance Viols to Wagnerian Tubas: A History of the Symphony Orchestra.”

A cultural cornerstone of Ventura County, the New West Symphony provides accessible world-class performances and educational opportunities to the community. Under Maestro Boris Brott’s energetic leadership, the New West Symphony offers performances of symphonic masterpieces with appearances by renowned guest artists to great acclaim.
