Camarillo, Calif., December 4, 2003 - California State University Channel Islands has officially closed undergraduate admissions for the Fall 2004 semester. The University stopped accepting applications at midnight on Sunday, November 30. Approximately 4,000 students applied for admission to the campus.

The approximately 4,000 students who applied to the University include 3,015 first-time freshmen, 834 upper-division transfer students, and 37 students who applied for the University's teaching credential program. The Office of Admissions and Records will process the applications and send out notification letters between February 15 and March 31.

To comply with the state's budget language, which stipulates that all California State University campuses will not receive funding for enrollment growth next year, Cal State Channel Islands cannot increase enrollment numbers past those in the 2003-2004 academic year. Based upon the number of students who will graduate and anticipated student retention rates, the University predicts that it will be able to admit approximately 218 first-time freshmen and approximately 376 upper-division transfer students.

Students who meet the minimum CSU eligibility requirements will be offered provisional admission to the University. Students invited to enroll for classes will be selected according to their residence, intended major, and preparation. In keeping with its commitment to the local community, the University will reserve 90 percent of the available spots for students residing in Ventura County, southern Santa Barbara County, and northern Los Angeles County. The remaining 10 percent will be reserved for California residents in other counties. The University will not accept students from outside of California or international students. Applicants should request official transcripts of their in-progress work to be sent to CSUCI to be received no later than January 30, 2004

The Office of Admissions and Records will notify applicants by letter as to whether they have been admitted to the University and invited to enroll or whether they have been admitted to the wait list. Students not qualified for admission will also be notified.

“We are extremely excited about the student interest in our campus and will do our best to uphold our commitment to admit qualified applicants,” comments Dr. Wm. Gregory Sawyer, Vice President for Student Affairs. “But state budget constraints and our enrollment cap will force us to make some difficult decisions. Students can be assured that we will uphold standards of fairness and evaluate each individual on his/her own merits.”

The application deadline for postbaccalaureate/credential students is February 6, 2004.

Student inquiries regarding the application process should be sent via email to admissionsandrecords@csuci.edu.
