Camarillo, Calif., November 3, 2003 - California State University Channel Islands will be hosting the 13th Annual CSU Media Arts Festival on November 14-16. The CSU Media Arts Festival is a film, video, and interactive media competition established in 1991 to showcase the best work of the students of the twenty-three campuses in the California State University system. In addition to a competition and screening of student works, the festival will also offer three days of seminars for CSU students and faculty.

Approximately 200 students from campuses throughout the California State University system competed in the competition, which accepted submissions in eight different categories: narrative, animation, music video, experimental, documentary, TV short forms, TV long forms, and interactive media. Twenty-two students, representing fifteen different campuses of the CSU, were selected as finalists. Among these finalists are two students from Cal State Channel Islands; films by John Weckworth ("A Stitch in Time") and John Steward ("Hotel California") were chosen for the experimental category.

Winners of each category will receive $500 and a "Rosebud Award." A prize of $250 will be awarded to the campus department of each winning entrant. A grand prize of $1,000 will be awarded to the winner of "Best In Show."

"I am very pleased that two art majors from CSUCI were singled out for their exceptional work in digital video," comments Jack Reilly, Professor of Art, "especially considering the high standards the judges have set for the festival this year. In the future, we hope to see more of our students accepted into a broad range of categories."

Screening of works by finalists in the competition will take place on Friday, November 14, 6:00 to 11:00 p.m. at California State University Channel Islands, Conference Hall 1. An awards presentation and reception hosted by The Hollywood Reporter in honor of the winners will take place at the same location on Saturday, November 15, 7:00 to 10:00 p.m. The screening and reception are free and open to the public.

In addition to the screening of student works, attendees of the festival will enjoy a host of seminars taught by CSU faculty and professionals from the entertainment industry. Seminar topics include directing, how to pitch a script, careers in animation, cinematography, writing for film and television, producing, funding and grant writing, working with actors, and representation for directors and writers. The seminars assist students with the transition between producing films in college classes and working in the actual film and television industries.
