Ceramic bowlsMay 3, 2018 - In an effort to give back to CSUCI, the Advanced Ceramics class recently held an “empty bowl” fundraiser to benefit the Dolphin Pantry.  “Empty bowl” fundraisers have been a tradition within the clay community for generations and are often held to raise money for local soup kitchens and other community organizations.

Under the direction of Marianne McGrath, Assistant Professor of Art, the students decided to meet an immediate need on campus and agreed that the Dolphin Pantry was the most direct way to contribute back to the campus community. Students spent time creating bowls out of clay, then selling them for $5 each at the Central Mall, raising over $1,000.

Due to the success of the event, there are now plans to hold it annually each spring to benefit the Dolphin Pantry and other organizations throughout the campus.  Current ideas include mug sales to ease off single-use plastics and creative centerpieces sold to raise funds for student scholarships.

The following students participated in the Empty Bowl fundraiser:

  • Lorna Barini
  • Jessica Bowen
  • Roxanne Casas
  • Jessica Evrist
  • Natalie Gula
  • Patricia Keller
  • Adam Kessler
  • Stephanie Lee
  • Sadie Spangler Lewis
  • Levi Loggins
