Sydney WahlenmaierApril 5, 2018 - To ensure her Communication capstone project is successful, student Kathryn Thomas is using the skills and knowledge she's acquired thus far at CI to volunteer with a local 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, The Young and Brave Foundation. Part of the final course in Communication students' undergraduate careers, the Communication Service Learning Capstone provides an opportunity for students to engage in a research or service-learning project and requires 75 hours of volunteer work during the semester.

Kathryn and other Communication students will be on hand this Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon at Mile 26 Sports in Ventura (1450 E. Thompson Blvd.) as the foundation hosts its inaugural 5K run in honor of Sydney Wahlenmaier, a brave young girl with an unmatched zest for life, who passed away from complications of cancer in 2016.

Part of the support provided by capstone participants includes set-up, clean-up, distribution of t-shirts, distribution of water to runner and walkers, taking photos, and providing community support. Additionally, an interview was conducted with Sydney's family to gather content for event promotion.

The 5K run is open to everyone and the entry fee is donation-based. All funds raised will support cancer warriors in need.

*The Young and Brave Foundation has a mission of helping young adults, children and families diagnosed with all forms of cancer.
