Lamia Balafrej

Oct. 27, 2021 – The Global Premodern Studies Lecture Series will continue on Nov. 17 at 6 p.m. in Broome Library 2325 with a public lecture presented by Lamia Balafrej, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Art History at UCLA.

“Slavery, Gender, and the Image in Medieval Islam” emerges from her research into the connections between slavery, artistic practices, and technology in the medieval Islamic world. Starting from the observation that medieval Islamic art abounds with images of female slaves, whether servants, musicians, dancers, or concubines, while free women are seldom represented, Professor Balafrej will explore the meaning of enslavement in Islamic visual arts.

She specializes in the arts of the medieval and early modern Islamic world with particular interests in the intersection of labor, materiality, and representation, as well as the relation between aesthetics and ethics. Her first book, “The Making of the Artist in Late Timurid Painting” (2019), revealed how artists engaged with self-reflection and theories of authorship in Persian painting, using aspects of composition, facture, and representation to define artistic authority.

Please register in advance if you plan to attend. Space is limited.
