Feb. 7, 2019 - The Mathematics department is pleased to present their next seminar: Exploring the universe with gravitational waves, being held on Monday, Feb. 11 from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. in Sierra Hall 2411.

Brittany Kamai will discuss the detection of gravitational waves - distortions in the fabric of space-time - that are measurable here on earth. Incredibly precise detectors are required to measure gravitational waves due to their extremely microscopic size. These detectors are quite intricate and provide a window to the universe that did not previously exist, allowing users to see such astronomical events like black holes and neutron stars merging into one another.
