Pachuca Boogie Night

Feb. 26, 2019 - The Chicana/o Studies program is pleased to present the upcoming Pachuquisma Symposium and Pachuca Boogie Noche de Cultura on Friday, March 1.

The Pachuquisma Symposium will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Petit Salon and examines the impact of Chicanas, Latinas and Indigenous women of the mid-20th century. Some identified as "Pachucas," and while they are remembered for their diverse forms of rebellion, they were also punished for transgressing the social mores of their time. This unique symposium will bring together scholars, artists, musicians and performers in a rare conversation on the lasting legacy of the pachucas.

The panel discussion honoring Phyllis Estrella will be presented by Professor Maria Malagon from CSU Fullerton, Professor Catherine S. Ramirez from UC Santa Cruz and Vanessa Sanchez, a dancer choreographer and educator from La Mezcla San Francisco.

The symposium is free and open to the public.

After the symposium, re-join us for an evening of style & profile and dance & boogie to the soulful oldies sounds of R&B/doo wop sensation Vicky Tafoya and the Big Beat. This all-ages event features a swing dance lesson at 8 p.m. and music and dancing from 9 to 11:30 p.m. in the Petit Salon.

Special guest MC, the multi-talented Jeanette Godoy will be sure to add to the evening fun.

All ages are welcome and the event is free (VCTC accessible or a $6 parking fee).
