Oct. 31, 2018 - Join your peers for the monthly 'Our Stories Matter' discussion series talk on Monday, Nov. 5 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in Broome 2325. This month's talk will focus on Revolutionary Heroes: Dying for Redemption.

Since it's release in Feb. 2018, the film Black Panther has enjoyed a celebratory reception, being hailed for its empowering representations of blackness. Assistant Professor of English, Raquel Baker, Ph.D., will share her reading of supervillain Erik Killmonger as a representation of the willful annihilation of revolutionary black consciousness in a film that ultimately redeems African identity through the degradation of African American-ness.

Joining her will be Assistant Professor in Chicana/o Studies, Nicholas Centino, Ph.D., who will talk about how death and grief in communities of color serve as catalyst points in Disney's productions of Moana, Coco and Black Panther. Served up as mainstream entertainment, audiences literally consume the dead as Indigenous bodies are sacrificed for our pleasure.
