June 7, 2018 - In today's technology-driven world, it is easy to jump on to the nearest network to ensure you can stay connected and share those perfect vacation photos. Before you connect, though, be aware of the network you're connecting to and the risks associated with an unsecured network.
Digital security is crucial to keeping your personal information protected, whether you're planning a local road trip or traveling internationally. Follow these four steps provided by Stay Safe Online to ensure you are keeping your information secure:
- Keep your devices clean: Before heading out the door, be sure all web-connected devices (PCs, smartphones, tablets) are free from malware and infections by running the most current versions of software and apps. Ensure your devices are up-to-date with the latest antivirus and OS patches.
- Stop and think before you connect to a public WiFi: WiFi is available everywhere you go: hotels, airports, parks and museums. While it's great to have access, these networks are entirely open and unsecured. Use common sense and be cautious when using these networks.
- Paid WiFi does not mean a secure WiFi: Paying to use a restricted WiFi, does not mean its safe. It's possible there is no encryption in place to stop eavesdropping on your device.
- Beware of evil twins: Hackers will set up rogue WiFi's with names like "Free WiFi." Please confirm the hotspot with the owner before you connect.
