Students Sweep Interactive Media Awards

Four CI Art students earned top awards for their interactive media and video work at the statewide CSU Media Arts Festival held last month. The annual festival recognizes the best in film, video and interactive media work by students from all 23 CSU campuses. The CI student victories continue an impressive 11-year winning streak. CI students dominated the Interactive Media category – earning all three top spots.

Eamon Stewart took home first place and a $500 Rosebud Award for his personal website, http://www.eamonstewart.com, which showcases his portfolio of work in film, animation and motion graphics. The Ventura native graduated last spring from the Art program. He works at a branding company, is completing an animated short film, and is co-creator of “Waffle Party,” a weekly Web comic that he produces with friend, collaborator and fellow CI alumnus Erik Scoggan.

Nichole Couch, a spring graduate from Lancaster now working as a graphic designer, earned second place in Interactive Media for the website she created as a class project for a cheesecake company, http://tinyurl.com/NicoleCouch.

Dani Kwan, a spring 2013 Art graduate from West Hills, won third place in Interactive Media for her portfolio website, http://www.danikwan.com, showcasing her work in graphic design, illustration and fashion design. Kwan is a graphic designer for a Los Angeles-based swimwear company and is also pursuing her interests as a costume designer and freelance web designer.

The three winning websites in the Interactive Media category were designed and created as final projects in Web Design courses taught by CI Associate Professor of Art Liz King and CI Senior Web Designer and Lecturer Ryan Garcia in the fall 2012 and spring 2013 semesters.

Adam Webber, an Art major from Lafayette, took second place in the Experimental Video category for “Einstein’s Dream,” https://vimeo.com/77234830. The video, completed in Elizabeth Leister's Art 312: Time-Based Imaging and Compositing course, explores the concept of time as inspired by the book "Einstein's Dreams" by Alan Lightman.

Sierra Hall Construction to Begin in January

The construction of Sierra Hall - a three story, 66,000 square foot building located at the corner of Los Angeles Avenue and Ventura Street -- was designed to meet LEED-Platinum standards and will provide new science instructional labs and classrooms.

LEED is a program developed by the United States Green Building Council that encourages the construction of energy and resource-efficient buildings. Platinum is the highest level within LEED’s rating system, which offers points in eight categories for adopting specified building practices, material or products.

Sierra Hall’s innovative and sustainable design earned an $82,000 rebate from Southern California Edison and will make the building 28% more energy efficient that what is required by code. CI can look forward to the completion of Sierra Hall approximately two years from the start of construction.

Facilities Services (FS) Reduces Emissions by Switching to Bio-Based Motor Oil

FS recently switched from petroleum-based oil to eco-friendly, bio-based oil after an independent research project led by Environmental Science & Resource Management (ESRM) student John Slagboom. The report showed that landscaping equipment running on G-Oil 2-Cycle Motor Oil generated significantly (up to 65%) less hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxides¸ and carbon monoxide emissions than conventional petroleum-based oil. Additionally, FS personnel reported that the exhaust emissions from the weed whackers and blowers running on the cleaner G-Oil had little to no smell compared to the noxious exhaust emitted from the engines running on petroleum-based oil.

Reducing emissions by switching from petroleum based oil to a more eco-friendly, bio-based oil demonstrates Facilities Services’ commitment to improving campus sustainability. Special thanks to Director of Facilities Services Raudel Banuelos, Lead Groundsworker Dannie Fox, and Groundsworkers Paul Lopez, Richard Ortiz, and Andreas Gruenig for supporting and gathering field data from daily operation of the weed eaters used in this research project.
