Learning Communities Workshop- Sept. 12
Join us for a workshop on "Learning Communities: Classroom Community and Student Success", hosted by Jacob Jenkins , Assistant Professor, Communications, on Friday, Sept. 12 from 1:30 to 3 p.m. in Broome Library, Room 1756. This workshop will explore what it means to be a learning community at CI, along with specific tips and techniques for fostering a sense of community in your own classroom.
Research has consistently shown the positive impact of community on student attendance, completion, and retention rates. This reality is especially evident among first generation and racially/ethnically diverse populations.

Sidewalk CPR Workshop - Sept. 15
The campus community is invited to participate in a Sidewalk CPR workshop on Monday, Sept. 15 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Petit Salon. Instructors will be on available to teach the correct way to apply hands-only CPR to someone in need.

Constitution Day of Events – Sept. 17
September 17, 1787 the U.S. Constitution was ratified. Constitution Day is an annual celebration of the Constitution and the society it helped form. The Centers for Community and Multicultural Engagement, John Spoor Broome Library, and the Chicana/o Studies and Political Science programs invite you to celebrate Constitution Day with the following events on Wednesday, Sept. 17:
Exhibition of the books on U.S. Constitution. Sept. 15-19, Broome Library Reading Room, Millennium News Center
Interested in learning more about the U.S. Constitution? The Broome Library will display books about the Constitution and Bill of Rights throughout the week. You can peruse the document itself, read about how the constitution has changed throughout the years, and get a good feel for the time period and creators of our founding document by visiting this exhibit.
Documentary Screening: "Who is Dayani Cristal" from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Malibu Hall 100.
This Sundance documentary award winner follows the staff from the Pima County Morgue in Arizona who identify the bodies of men and woman who tried to immigrate into the United States. Gael Garcia Bernal retraces the steps of the migrant trail starting in Central America. He shows the first hand dangers that they face along with their motivations, hopes and fears as well as the debate that is going on the other side of the border. Run time is 85 minutes.
Panel Discussion: Immigration and the US Constitution from 1:30 to 2:45 p.m. in Malibu Hall 100
There is very little in the U.S. Constitution about immigration; yet the Supreme Court has been determining the constitutionality of immigration laws since 1837. Recent events – such as the detention of migrant children, the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, and DREAMer protests – have raised questions about the limitations, as well as the promise, of the Constitution. On Constitution Day, a panel of professors, lawyers, and community organizers will discuss the issues immigrants face, immigration laws and policies, and the possibility of extending legal protections to undocumented migrants living in the U.S.

Peace Corps and Pizza - Sept. 23
The Center for Community Engagement is hosting a Peace Corps information session. As the preeminent international service organization of the United States, Peace Corps Volunteers work at the grassroots level toward sustainable change that lives on long after their service. Peace Corps sends Americans abroad to undertake the most urgent needs of people around the world.
Interested in learning more about this incredible opportunity? Join us on Tuesday, Sept. 23 in Bell Tower Room 1568 from 12 to 3 p.m. to listen to a returned Peace Corps volunteer share their experience. We also will be having a panel consisting of other former Peace Corps volunteers, including CI faculty members, to answer questions and share their stories. Pizza will be served.

Emergency Preparedness Forum - Sept. 25
The annual Emergency Preparedness Forum will be held Thursday, Sept. 25 from 11 a.m.- 1 p.m. in the South Quad. Students, staff and faculty will have an opportunity to learn campus and personal safety preparedness.

Faculty Workshop: Multicultural perspectives across the curriculum (2 part) - Sept. 26
Members of CI's faculty are invited to participate in a double workshop hosted by Sofia Samatar and Julia Balen on Friday, Sept. 26 in Broome Library, Room 1756. The first session will be held from 12 to 1:30 p.m. and will consist of a brief presentation on ways we have been thinking about multicultural perspectives across the curriculum (including the multicultural rubric now being tested in GE classes) followed by a facilitated discussion of our understandings as CI faculty of what it ideally might look like.
The second session will be held from 1:30 to 3 p.m. and will be a hands-on workshop. Bring your syllabi, multicultural assignment ideas, examples of student work, and/or problems. Attendees will discuss how to incorporate it into the grading of assignments to facilitate the assessment of learning outcomes, and apply it to student work. Leave with new or improved multicultural projects for your favorite course, and ideas for how to use folioCI to efficiently assess mission-based outcomes.

United Way Day of Caring – Sept. 27
The CI community will participate in United Way of Ventura County annual Day of Caring to take place on Saturday, Sept. 27 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. This annual event will bring together CI students, staff and faculty to help nonprofit organizations in the community with a variety of tasks. Join us and be among 1,000 volunteers helping 30+ community organizations across Ventura County.

JET Program Information Session – Sept. 30
Are you going to graduate this year? Have you considered teaching English in another country?
The Center for International Affairs is hosting a JET Program information session on Tuesday, Sept. 30 from 12 to 2 p.m. in Broome Library, Room 1756. The JET Program is an internationally known English Teaching exchange program. If accepted, you will be a paid teacher to teach English at elementary, junior, and/or high schools throughout Japan and possibly other countries.

MVS Speaker Series: Oct. 3, Oct. 17, and Nov. 21
The Fall 2014 MVS Speaker Series will feature three prominent executives who will present on issues they have faced in their respective industries.
On Friday, Oct. 3, Scott Zolke will discuss his career as a partner at Loeb & Loeb, LLP. Zolke focuses his practice on media, entertainment, sports, and intellectual property law. On Friday, Oct. 17, Marty Albertson will discuss his career as Chairman of the Board and CEO of Guitar Center, Inc. Albertson started his career at Guitar Center as a salesman and took on positions of increasing responsibility as he worked his way up. Now retired, he still remains non-executive Chairman of the Board. On Friday, Nov. 21, Kelsey Timmerman will present on the realities of the global food industry and will discuss his latest book, Where Am I Eating? (2013).

R.A.D. Classes - Oct. 6, 8, 13 & 15
Rape Aggression Defense (R.A.D.) is the largest women's self-defense training program in the country and is taught by more than 350 universities and municipal law enforcement departments nationwide.
The CI Police Department will be offering a R.A.D. program on Oct. 6, 8, 13, and 15 from 6 to 9 p.m. This is a 12-hour class (3 hours each day) and participants must attend all four sessions to complete the program. Class size is limited so sign up now at the CI Police Department in Placer Hall. A $20 fee will be collected at the time of registration that will be fully refunded upon completion of the course.

SAFE Training - Oct. 15
Faculty, staff and student leaders are invited to sign up for the SAFE (Students, Administrators and Faculty for Equality) workshop , to be held on Wednesday, Oct. 15 from 2 to 5 p.m. in Broome Library, Room 1360. Upon completion, participants will get a SAFE sign for their door to indicate their alliance with the SAFE principles.
This workshop will offer participants a chance to become familiar with some of the pressing issues for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people on campus. Participants will practice dealing with specific situations like hate speech and workshop ideas .
