Who we are
The Learning Resource Center (LRC) is a community of staff, faculty, and students working collaboratively as educators to support the academic confidence and success of CSUCI students. We specialize in tutoring support for Quantitative Reasoning, Chemistry, Biology, Psychology, Pre-Nursing/Nursing, and a variety of STEM and other academic subjects.
Join our Team
Working at the LRC is an opportunity to support your fellow students while developing your own academic, professional, and leadership skills.
LRC student employees receive competitive wages, flexible scheduling around their courses, a positive and collaborative working environment, and opportunities for professional growth and advancement. Tutors also have opportunities to work closely with faculty and strengthen their own understanding of academic material through teaching and peer education.
Our tutor training program provides opportunities to earn CRLA Level 1 and/or Level 2 certifications.
Most importantly, LRC student employees are an essential part of our campus community. Whether you are tutoring course content or helping students connect with LRC services, you have an opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the academic experiences of your peers.
LRC Student Employee Roles
Instructional Student Assistants (Tutors)
LRC Tutors provide individual and small-group academic support to CSUCI students. Tutors are also assigned as Embedded Peer Educators to specific courses and work collaboratively with faculty to support students enrolled in those courses.

Employment Opportunities
Tutor Hiring Cycle
We accept tutor applications, Faculty Recommendation Forms, and faculty nominations throughout the year.
We typically begin reviewing applications around Week 6 of each semester and begin contacting selected applicants for interviews. Our goal is to make hiring decisions by Finals Week for employment during the following semester.
Hiring on this timeline allows new employees to complete the CSUCI student employment onboarding process and participate in required LRC training before beginning work.
Subjects We Are Currently Prioritizing
We are currently especially interested in tutor applicants who can support:
- Math
- Business
- Accounting
- Economics
- Physics
- Psychology
We also prioritize applicants who can support Area 2 Mathematical Concepts and Quantitative Reasoning courses and students who anticipate being able to continue working with the LRC for at least two semesters.
A tutor's major does not necessarily determine every subject they may be able to support. If you have successfully completed courses in these or other LRC-supported subjects and feel confident helping other students understand the material, we encourage you to apply.
You must be a current CSUCI student to be considered for an LRC Tutor position.
Training Expectations
New tutors complete paid training before beginning any tutoring work with students. If hired, you should expect to complete asynchronous training materials prior to the beginning of the semester and attend required Zoom training sessions.
Additional training and professional development continue throughout your employment with the LRC.
Interested in Becoming a Student Assistant?
We also employ a smaller team of Student Assistants who are essential to LRC operations.
You do not need to be interested in tutoring to be interested in becoming an LRC Student Assistant. If the organizational, customer service, and clerical side of the LRC sounds like a better fit for you, we would love to hear from you.
During the tutor hiring process, we may also discuss Student Assistant opportunities with applicants who are interested. This can be a great opportunity for students who may not yet have enough coursework or experience to become a tutor but who we would still love to bring into the LRC team.
If you are interested specifically in becoming an LRC Student Assistant, please email koa.johnson@csuci.edu for information about current opportunities and application requirements.
