What Are Learning Communities?

Open to all majors and interests, Learning Communities empower first-year and transfer students to integrate into and thrive in university life, inside and outside the classroom. Research shows participation in learning communities increases students’ academic and personal success.

Learning Communities (LCs) give these students a guaranteed seat in a block of popular credit-earning courses in the Fall semester and a guaranteed seat in at least one popular for-credit class in the Spring, meeting graduation and General Education requirements. Each Community centers around a specific major, identity or interest and aligns with the CSUCI Mission Pillars.

Students can participate in a Learning Community or a coursework-based Living-Learning Community that gives students the option of residing in campus housing.*

There are several advantages to joining a Living-Learning Community:

  • Opportunities to live on the same floor as other students in their Learning Community
  • Access to Embedded Peer Mentors and Resident Advisor. Both are trained, college-age students who support their fellow students in navigating college life and building skills leading to social and academic success
  • Opportunities to join the “P.O.D Squad” and serve as a resource for other new students

Participating in these communities has shown to improve student learning, persistence to the second year, time to graduation and stronger relationships with peers and faculty.

*Commuter students are welcome to be a part of a Living-Learning Community.

There is no extra cost to participate in a Learning Community.
