Campus Reading Celebration Welcomes Dr. Safiya Umoja NobleMar. 1, 2021 – The annual Campus Reading Celebration is back and this year we are honored to host Dr. Safiya Umoja Noble, author of this year’s book selection, Algorithms of Oppression: How Search Engines Reinforce Racism.

In her book, Dr. Noble challenges the idea that search engines like Google offer an equal playing field for all forms of ideas, identities, and activities. She argues that a number of contributing factors have led to a biased set of search algorithms that privilege whiteness and discriminate against people of color, specifically women of color.

In anticipation of the virtual celebration on April 7 at 5:30 p.m., we are pleased to announce that members of the CSUCI community can now order a print copy or download an electronic copy of the book at no charge.
