Mar. 23, 2021 – The annual Campus Reading Celebration is coming up on April 7 and this year we welcome Dr. Safiya Umoja Noble, author of this year’s book selection, Algorithms of Oppression: How Search Engines Reinforce Racism.

In her book, Dr. Noble challenges the idea that search engines like Google offer an equal playing field for all forms of ideas, identities, and activities. She argues that a number of contributing factors have led to a biased set of search algorithms that privilege whiteness and discriminate against people of color, specifically women of color.

The virtual celebration will kick off on April 7 at 3:30 p.m. with a meeting between students and the author, followed by the main event at 5:30 p.m.
